Our department started with two park sites, Carson and Scott parks. Today, we have expanded it to include 12 park sites, four mini-parks, two pools and two Aquatic Centers, a Skate Park, Boxing Center, and a SportsComplex. This goal was reached in approximately 25 years due to community participation and excellent department leadership. This department creates a wide variety of activities for all age groups and conducts an incredible array of special events. The city’s park system is well known and respected throughout the state. Philosophy of the Parks and Recreation DepartmentIt is the goal and philosophy of the Parks and Recreation Department to provide meaningful environmental, recreational, and social experiences; to provide positive recreational opportunities and experiences that will serve the diverse needs and interests of the community; and to provide opportunities that will promote mental awareness, physical fitness, and personal and social development. The Permits Section can help you with flyers, invitations, banners, canopies, chairs, tables, tablecloths, moon bounces, helium tanks, barbecues, room decorations, and equipment set-ups for family reunions, company picnics, and parties. The three neighborhood parks assigned to this section all provide a comprehensive recreational program designed to meet the needs of their surrounding neighborhoods. Each park has sports facilities, playground areas, a community room, and a vast array of recreation programs for all age groups. Program Section 3Administers and coordinates a variety of park programs and special events that reflect the needs and wishes of a diverse ethnic community at city facilities (Anderson, Hemingway, Stevenson Park and Gym), as well as a various special programs, including Kids Club, Summer Day Camp, Teen & Enrichment, and Aquatics (Scott and Carson pools, Dominguez and Hemingway Aquatic Centers). The Kids Club Program is a recreation and enrichment after-school program for participants 5 to 12 years of age. It is designed to provide a safe place for children while allowing parents to work with a secure feeling knowing that their children are safe and well supervised. The Aquatics Program is presented at Carson Pool, Dominguez Aquatic Center, Hemingway Aquatic Centers and Scott pools. The program includes swimming lessons, recreational swimming, and diving instruction as well as aqua aerobics, water polo, synchronized swimming, swim team, junior lifeguards, and lap swimming. Program Section 4Administers and coordinates a variety of park programs and events that reflect the needs and wishes of a diverse ethnic community at Carriage Crest, Mills, Veterans, and Dominguez park as well as administers and coordinates various special programs for the SportsComplex. Veterans SportsComplex is situated on 12 acres and has a gymnasium, fitness center, weight room, racquetball courts, locker room, and one amphitheater. The SportsComplex offers something new and different to Carson recreation users and is operated on a membership basis much like a health club or YMCA. Veterans Park is located adjacent to the Veterans SportsComplex and has two lighted baseball diamonds, a Skatepark, two lighted tennis courts, picnic areas, play areas, a snack-bar building, and parking lots. VOLUNTEERSVolunteerism has always been the backbone of the American way of life, from the Red Cross workers who lend a helping hand to victims of natural disasters to the volunteer coaches who teach our children about sports and fair play. In Carson, volunteerism is a vital force for the community because it takes a tremendous number of people to ensure that recreational services are provided efficiently and effectively. Volunteers have made a difference. They have often unselfishly pitched in and given valuable time in delivering important services that otherwise could not be provided. Literally, thousands of volunteers ages 18 and up from all walks of life individually contribute more than 150 hours annually. If you would like to make a difference and are willing to give your time and effort to Carson's recreation programs, you are encouraged to contact your neighborhood park or the Corporate Yard at (310) 847-3570.
