City of Carson Approves Resolution to Commence Process to Name A City Gym After the Late NBA Legend Kobe Bryant
CARSON, CA – Last night on February 18, 2020, Carson Mayor Albert Robles introduced Resolution 20-039 requesting that the Carson Parks and Recreation Commission consider the naming of the city basketball gym the Kobe Bryant Gym, which was unanimously approved by the Carson City Council.
Kobe Bryant was a five-time National Basketball Association champion, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and a global sports icon who retired in 2016, and afterwards added an Academy Award to his considerable accolades. Tragically, he perished Sunday, January 26, 2020, with his daughter Gianna Bryant, and friends Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Christina Mauser, and Ara Zobayan. The impact of his tragic death unleashed shock waves across the globe.
“Obviously as a Laker fan I was shocked by the news of compa Kobe Bryant’s death, but as a father who also takes his kids around during the weekend to their games, this tragedy particularly resonated with me,“ said Carson Mayor Albert Robles.
Watching Kobe Bryant during his entire career many feel that they personally knew him, but he had a special presence in the City of Carson, because he filmed a commercial here in 2004, specifically at the Gym that Mayor Albert Robles is requesting be named and forever known as the Kobe Bryant Gym.
“This is a heartfelt gesture by the City of Carson to name a basketball gym that Kobe Bryant visited to memorialize his legacy as a basketball player, husband and father,“ stated Carson Mayor Albert Robles. “Kobe Bryant was an individual whose tirelessness and competitive drive as a professional were as notable as his commitment to family and friends, and what better to pay tribute than right here in the heart of the South Bay, a basketball gym in Carson where he was considered like a friend,“ added Carson Mayor Albert Robles. “We honor the legacy of Kobe Bryant on the court and as an enduring figure who will never be forgotten by naming the City’s most widely-used basketball gym to serve as an inspiration for future generations,“ concluded Mayor Albert Robles.
