Emergency Supply Checklist

Plan Ahead

  • Plan for at least 3 days to be without water, gas and electricity.
  • Create a "Disaster Supply Kit".
  • Keep this guide visible
  • Keep on hand a book on disasters that affect your area.

Seeing and Hearing

  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Extra batteries
  • Portable radio with batteries
  • Extra pair of glasses

Health and Medical

  • First Aid Handbook
  • First Aid Kit: gauze, bandages, aspirin, tape, scissors, disinfectants, antiseptics, latex gloves, nonprescription meds
  • Prescription/special needs equipment (identify and keep handy)
  • Plastic garbage bags, chlorine, shovel for personal waste.



Documents

  • Important documents. Keep together in safe place. Store duplicates in a safety deposit box.

    • Wills, insurance, and investment documents
    • Household inventory, ownership, birth certificates
  • Important numbers: (credit cards, banking, licenses, etc.)

Food and Water

  • Nonperishable food for 3 days. 1 to 3 pounds (1 to 2 kg) per person per day of dried fruit, nonfat dry milk, canned tuna, stew, soup, beans, canned fruit juice, nuts, graham crackers.
  • Baby and pet supplies.
  • Water 3-6 gallons (12-24 liters) per person.
    1-2 gallons or (4-8 liters) of water per day per person for at least 3 days.
  • Manual can opener and utensils.
  • Cooking tools: camp stove or grill, fuel, charcoal, matches
Water Tips:

Boiling is the preferred way to purify water. Let water fully boil 1 minute. Cool before drinking.

If unable to boil, use pure chlorine bleach. Add 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) or 16 drops to each gallon. Shake or stir, then let stand 30 minutes. A slight chlorine taste and smell is normal. (Water heaters are a source for water.)

Safety Equipment

  • Fire extinguisher (ABC type)
  • Smoke detector and fire alarm
  • Whistle to blow if trapped/threatened
  • Crescent wrench for gas value 10-inch (25cm)
  • Other tools: duct tape, signal flare, knife, ax, shovel, crowbar 30" - 36" (1 meter), etc.
  • Special needs equipment: (e.g., oxygen tank, manual wheelchair for power chairs users, etc.)

Other

  • Money: small bills, quarters (ATMs may not work)
  • Special items for infants, pets, people with disabilities
  • Warm clothing: sturdy shoes, gloves & rain gear
  • Bedding: blankets/sleeping bag, tarp, tent, etc.

Storage

Storage Supplies in a sturdy trash barrel, box, suitcase, backpack or duffle bag. Store in closet, garbage or other safe place.

Have bag on hand to carry items if you need to evacuate.

Middle: Food
Bottom: Clothing, Bedding

  • Keep water in a separate container. Label your containers.

Car and Work

  • Walking shoes, gloves
  • Food - non - perishable
  • Water - 1 gallon (4 liters)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Radio, flashlights, batteries
  • Backpack for supplies
  • Money: small bills, quarters
  • Scissors or knife
  • Flares, fire extinguisher
  • Car Fuel, at least 1/4 full
  • Emergency blanket
  • Important phone numbers
