Carson Reclamation Authority Officials Announced Start of Site Work for Upscale Shopping Destination

Officials from the Carson Reclamation Authority, City and State announced today the beginning of the site work for the Los Angeles Premium Outlets, a new upscale outlet center in Carson, located about 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

“Today’s event is a celebration of the city’s resilience and determination to bring about a quality project that benefits our residents and the surrounding communities,” said Mayor Albert Robles. “The city never gave up and finally found the right project that will serve as the perfect destination for area residents and tourists visiting Southern California.”

“We are so pleased to be a part of this innovative new chapter for upscale outlet shopping in Los Angeles. We, along with our partners at Macerich, are excited for the future of this center and its surrounding cities and communities,” said Mark Silvestri, executive vice president Corporate Real Estate and Chief Operating Officer of Development for Simon Property Group.

The first phase will span 400,000 sq. feet. The center will feature 2,500 linear feet of frontage along the Interstate 405 (I-405) Freeway. Roughly 515,000 cars pass the site each day along I-405 and the Interstate 110 Freeway. The site has roughly 2.5 million residents within a 10-mile radius and is situated about 11 miles south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

At the kick-off ceremony were other City of Carson Council Members, the California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, CPCFA Executive Director Renee Webster-Hawkins, and DTSC Branch Chief Javier Hinojosa.

“We are rejuvenating what was once a toxic situation -- quite literally,” said State Treasurer Fiona Ma. “Not only does the project represent bold economic development to the City of Carson, it cleans up left over toxics and other contamination from the site’s former use as a landfill.”

Treasurer Ma noted that the CalReUSE grant demonstrates a commitment to investing in economic development and environmental justice by partnering with local communities like the City of Carson.

Carson’s leaders persevered and worked closely with the retail developers Macerich and Simon to bring their vision to life. State and local leaders see this high-quality project as one that will add revenue for the city and value to residents for many years to come, attracting locals and tourists from all over the world given the proximity to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Long Beach Airport.

As currently planned, the project’s shops and restaurants will be elevated above street level and sit atop a ground-level parking. Macerich and Simon plan to open the property in Fall 2021. No tenants have been announced.
