About
City of Carson's
Reverse 911 Emergency Notification System
Reverse 911 is an automated telephone
Emergency Notification System
the community can use in the event of an emergency or
disaster. In case of emergency, the way it works is that the system sends a recorded message to telephone owners.
This system has been successfully deployed in many small
towns, large municipalities, and college campuses.
The city of Carson has just implemented the system to
quickly alert its residents and businesses should the need
arise. It has the following features:
- It employs the GIS
mapping
systems that are the industry standards, so we can use our
existing GIS data. During an emergency, the mapping
system enables an operator to quickly include a group of
addresses from the map to contact based on their location.
- In addition to sending recorded voice messages, it can
make TTY/TDD calling by sending text messages to the
hearing impaired who have the required equipment
installed. It can also send fax document to a fax number.
- If phone lines are busy, the system will attempt to redial those numbers a predetermined number of times to make contact. If an answering machine picks up the call, the emergency message will be left on the machine.
- All AT&T telephone customers with landlines are
automatically in the system. Those with cell phones,
TTY/TDD service or Internet phone services must register
with the system for notifications.
