THE POSITION
Under general supervision, conducts and supervises basic/specialized physical fitness classes and programs for various age groups, conducts individual fitness evaluations, and develops individual fitness workout, wellness, and nutrition programs; works various schedules, and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Conducts personal training and/or provides individual nutrition sessions; instructs fitness level II and III progressions and follows all fitness level progressions; Personal Trainer prepares, plans, and instructs individual personal fitness and wellness programs; Nutritionist prepares, plans, and instructs nutrition and wellness plan for individuals on a daily basis and monthly basis, which includes daily menus; prepares and plans individual client wellness & workout programs with minimal supervision; demonstrates and enforces safe workout routines; ensures proper and safe operation of fitness, cardio, and strength equipment; provides guidance on nutrition and wellness; maintains client profiles; teaches and maintains control of large classes such as circuit training, youth fitness, and adult fitness; provides information to the public on class programs, activities, and events at the sports complex; assists in administering first aid; performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or
Experience: Completion of thirty (30) semester units with
a major in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science or a related field
and three (3) years of full-time, paid instruction experience at a recognized
health club facility plus one (1) year of paid instruction experience at the
Veterans Sports Complex. Additional
qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a
year-for-year basis up to one (1) year.
Knowledge of:
Basic training principles and safety guidelines; proper stretching and exercise techniques; class components/structure, basic anatomy and
physiology; sports, fitness, and wellness principles, activities, and
programs; First-aid
and CPR; proper use
and operation of fitness and sports equipment; organization and leadership techniques; interpersonal skills, using
tact, patience and courtesy.
Skill and/or
Ability to: Organize
the activities of individuals and groups using the complex and/or sports recreational facilities; give coherent instructions while
properly demonstrating the physical skills involved in the routine; calculate target heart rate
zones; establish
and maintain effective working relationships with others; apply First-Aid and CPR.
License and
Certificates: Possession of a valid California Class C
driver’s license. Employees in this
classification will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid
driver’s license and reflects driving record.
Possession of a valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR
certificate is required. Must possess
and maintain a minimum of three (3) valid certifications from a nationally
recognized organization such as American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM),
Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), American Council on
Exercise (ACE), or International Sports Science Association (ISSA), or any
other nationally recognized certification including, but not limited to,
personal training, lifestyle and weight management, youth fitness, nutrition, and
fitness therapy. Online certificates are
not acceptable.
Physical
Requirements and Working Conditions: Employee

class normally
require standing, walking, crouching, stooping, and
bending; mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and
manipulate objects; require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects
which may approximate 40 pounds and up to 60 pounds; require arduous exercise
and/or workout; require to work evenings and/or weekends.
