Open:
Under general supervision, conducts and supervises basic/specialized physical fitness aerobic classes and programs for various age groups, develops lesson formats and choreography; works various schedules; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Instructs large groups and maintains control of large class settings; instructs fitness level II and III progressions and follows the fitness level progressions; prepares and choreographs class programs with minimal supervision; teaches classes including, but not limited to, muscle conditioning, step aerobics, spinning, yoga, and pilates; gives verbal instructions and simultaneously gives physical demonstrations; maintains a rhythm; demonstrates safe and effective moves and flexibility exercises; may provide guidance on nutrition and wellness; maintains own music library, ensures proper and safe operation of aerobic fitness equipment and accessories as it pertains to the class; provides information to the public on class programs, activities and events at the sports complex; assists in administering first aid; must maintain an average of (10-15) ten to fifteen participants in class, per session; performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience: Completion of thirty (30) semester units with a major in physical education, kinesiology, exercise science or a related field and two (2) years of full-time, paid group exercise instruction experience plus six (6) months of paid instruction experience at the Veterans Sports Complex. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to one (1) year.
Knowledge of: Aerobic movement; basic training principles
and safety guidelines; proper stretching and exercise techniques; class
components/structure; basic anatomy and physiology; organization and leadership
techniques; sports, fitness, and wellness principles, activities, and programs;
safe use of equipment.
Skills and/or Ability to: Organize the activities of individuals and groups using the sports and fitness facilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; apply First-Aid and CPR.
License and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license. Employees in this classification will be
enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull
Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver’s license and
reflects driving record. Possession of
valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR certificate is required. Must possess a valid certification from a nationally
recognized organization such as
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Require standing, walking, jumping, crouching, stooping and bending; require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate objects; require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects which may weigh 40 pounds and up to 60 pounds; require arduous exercise, and/or workout; require to work evenings and/or weekends.
