  • Councilman Williams to Host Another Dialogue with Citizens
    City of Carson Councilmember Harold C. Williams will be hosting another session of one-on-one dialogue with the citizens of Carson on April 21 at Carson City Hall.

    The open-door session, aptly called “Let’s Talk” aims to provide Carson residents an opportunity to share their input on various issues that affect them in the community. The session is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. in the City Manager’s Conference Room. “Let’s Talk” is open to the public and no appointment is necessary.

    Williams believes that communication between elected officials and their constituents is a key to establishing a successful local government and a dynamic city.

    Williams also sees the session as an opportunity to update the community with new actions taken by the City Council and new developments expected around the city. The upcoming forum is second in a series of four sessions planned for the year. He also conducted four sessions in 2006.

  • Carson's Annual Health Fair Set for April 28

    Health Fair logo The City of Carson will offer a variety of free medical testing and share helpful information on various health issues at the annual Health Fair scheduled for April 28.
     
    The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Carson Community Center, located at 3 Civic Plaza in Carson. The fair is open to the public and admission is free.

    Medical professionals, representatives and volunteers from various organizations that offer health-related services will be on site to conduct a wide array of screenings for various conditions including osteoporosis and blood pressure, and offer free derma and dental scan.

    In addition to the tests that will be offered, the fair will also include demonstrations, and booths that provide information on prescription drugs, public health, and marrow donor registry.

  • Applications Now Accepted for Student Exchange Visit to Japan
     
    sister city logo The Carson Sister Cities Association (CSCA) is seeking students interested to participate in a two-week student exchange visit to its sister city Soka, Japan this summer.
     
    To be eligible for the student exchange program, students must be between 15 and 21 years old, a full-time student at a high school, college or university and maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5 over the last 18 months. Students must also submit proof that they reside in Carson for the past year.

    The student exchange program was started in 1979 to offer young people the experience of living in a foreign country and the opportunity to gain an understanding of a foreign culture through various educational activities throughout their stay. Over 25 student exchange programs have taken place between Carson and Soka ever since the sister city relationship was established 27 years ago.

    Students who will be selected for the exchange, which is scheduled for July 21 through August 6, will be staying with host families, but must be responsible for half of their airfare cost and all their personal travel expenses. Applications for the program may be picked up from the Public Information Office at Carson City Hall, 701 E. Carson Street, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Applications will be accepted until May 3.

  • Computer Classes Offered to Seniors

    Senior citizens who are interested in learning how to use a computer, looking to update their computer skills or want to become e-mail and internet savvy can sign up for any of the computer classes offered at the Senior Citizens Technology Lab at the Carson Community Center.

    Among the classes offered at the computer lab include Introduction to PCs, Basics of Word Processing, Excel, Beginning Internet and Intermediate Internet.

    Introduction to Internet is designed for the complete beginner and the class explores a typical personal computer system including hardware and software programs. Class will include a demonstration of word processing, e-mail features and file storage.

    The Basics of Word Processing class will teach seniors to create personal documents and learn the features and benefits of word processing.

    For the Excel class, seniors will learn to create electronic spreadsheets using formulas, functions, graphs and charts. They will learn to create simple database for address books, inventory and sales group organizations.

    The Internet classes will provide seniors the opportunity to become familiar with the World Wide Web and related utilities and teach them to access information using a variety of methods. The intermediate class will cover topics such as “cookies,” or temporary internet files, computer virus protection, instant messaging, setting up filters and many others.

  • City Offers Parent Teen Courses

    The City of Carson Public Safety Department provides various courses for adolescents on a variety of pertinent issues such as anger management and drug awareness and for parents who have strong-willed teens.
    The courses offered include Youth and the Law, Parent Project Program, Anger Management for Teens, Positive Choices (Drug/Alcohol Program) and Community Service for youth.
    All classes are offered after 3 p.m. and are conducted by trained facilitators. All courses are recognized by the Courts, the Probation Department and local schools.

  • Youth Commission Begins Give Back Program

    Would you like to be part of a teen committee that will coordinate a program to give back to the community?
    Carson teens are needed to offer volunteer hours in various programs such as senior citizen home visits, tutoring school age children, distributing Christmas toys and Thanksgiving baskets for needy families.
    The City of Carson also offers a wide variety of teen activities throughout the year, including the Teen Conference, Teen Dances, Sports Nights and Camping Trips.
