Carson is 40 in 2008!
The year 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Carson. To commemorate this milestone event, various events are lined up for the year, beginning with a special birthday party scheduled for February 23.
The 40th anniversary steering committee, which was established in mid 2006, has been busy over the last year in coming up with ideas and helping plan anniversary activities to take place throughout 2008. Aside from the birthday party in February, the City also plans to hold an anniversary parade in the summer to coincide with Carson’s annual Unity Day celebration. A plan to hold a New Year’s Eve Gala Ball to conclude the anniversary year is also currently in place.
Formerly a part of the unincorporated Los Angeles County area, Carson officially became an independent city on February 20, 1968, two weeks after residents voted in favor of incorporation. Voters also selected the name Carson for the new city and elected John Marbut as its first mayor.
On February 23, the City will celebrate this historical event with a birthday party at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The three-hour event will consist of a cake-and-punch celebration, entertainment, exhibits and booths selling 40th anniversary commemorative bricks and various other items.
The birthday party is open to the public and admission is free.
For more information on the event and other 40th anniversary activities, please contact the Public Information Office at (310) 952-1740.

The bricks, which can be personalized with up to three lines of information, are available in two varieties – a white premium brick priced at $200 and a basic terra cotta for $150. Every brick purchase comes with a miniature replica as a free souvenir.
Brick orders will be accepted through most of the year and all bricks sold will be used to relandscape a portion of the Xeriscape Garden, located between City Hall and the Community Center.
