  • Host Families Needed for Visiting Japanese Exchange Students

    The City of Carson is seeking host families for
    foreign students who will be visiting from Soka City,
    Japan this summer.

    The exchange students, accompanied by a
    chaperon, will be visiting Carson from July 20 through
     August 3. The Carson Sister Cities Association needs
    volunteer families to open their homes to the delegates for
    one or both weeks of the visit.

    The visit is part of the Sister Cities student exchange program, which takes place every two years. The City of Carson has hosted over a hundred students from Soka City ever since the two cities began their sister cities relationship in 1980.

    Activities lined-up for the delegation include official gatherings, excursions and educational tours during the day. The delegates are expected to spend most evenings and weekends with their host families.

    Host families will receive two complimentary tickets either for the welcome dinner or the farewell brunch for the visiting students.

    To become a host family, please submit an application no later than June 19, 2006. Application forms are also available at the Public Information Office, located at Carson City Hall, 701 E. Carson Street. The approval process will include a confidential law enforcement background check.

  • City of Carson to Host Memorial Tribute for Late Congresswoman

    City officials will lead the Carson community in honoring the life and legacy of the late Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald with a memorial tribute scheduled for June 1.

    Millender-McDonald, a champion of women empowerment, civil rights and social justice was a Carson resident until her death on April 21, 2007 at the age of 69.

    The tribute will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald Community Center, located at 3 Civic Plaza Drive in Carson. The event is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required.

    Speakers will memorialize the late congresswoman from various perspectives – as a loving mother, the “Queen of Carson”, friend of the community, and the ultimate public servant. Video footages showing highlights of her political career and other aspects of her life will also be presented during the event.

    The event is expected to be attended by elected officials from the 37th congressional district -- which includes Carson --political colleagues, supporters and individuals whose lives were touched by the late congresswoman.

    Millender-McDonald’s political career started in the Carson City Council in 1992. She was elected to the California Assembly in 1994 and later to the U.S. Congress, where she served seven terms until her last days in 2007. In honor of her contributions to the Carson community, the Carson City Council also recently renamed its community center after her.

  • Pet Vaccination and Licensing Offered
    at Carson’s Annual Rabies Clinic


    A low cost vaccination clinic for dogs and cats is scheduled for June 4 as part of the annual John D. Calas Memorial Rabies Clinic jointly sponsored by the City of Carson and the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control.

    The vaccinations will be offered from 7 p.m. through 8:30 p.m. at the parking lot of Carson City Hall, located at 701 E. Carson Street.

    Rabies vaccinations, a State law requirement for all dogs four months of age and older are available for $6. Six–in-one vaccinations for dogs eight weeks and older, and four-in-one vaccinations for cats eight weeks and older are available at $14 each. The clinic is also offering microchips, a tracking device for dogs, for free.

    Pet owners may also purchase or renew state mandated licenses at the clinic. Renewal notices are required to renew licenses onsite.

    Pet owners are required to put their dogs on a leash and cats placed in carriers during the clinic and must be able to control their pets at all times.

  • 19th Annual Carson Business Awards Scheduled for June 11

    The City of Carson and the Carson Economic Development Commission will be hosting the 19th Annual Business Breakfast on June 11 at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center.

    The business awards is held each year to recognize overall outstanding businesses in the community and to acknowledge the contributions of local companies that have made remarkable contributions to the city’s economic vitality.

    The theme for this year’s event is “Carson Still Makes Sense.” The awardees include Carson Cyclery, Chivas USA, Cormier Chevrolet, Real Estate Merchants and True Value Hardware.

    Breakfast and registration is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., with the actual program set to start at 8 a.m. The event is free but advance reservation is required.
