SOUTH BAY COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS GIVEN 2020 CROWN COMMUNITIES AWARD BY AMERICAN CITY AND COUNTY

City of Carson Helped Secure Award by Acquiring South Bay Fiber Network

As a member city in the South Bay Council of Governments (SBCOG), the City of Carson assisted the joint powers authority in its most recent achievement of obtaining the Crown Communities Award for the South Bay Fiber Network (SBFN), a municipal fiber network spanning 16 cities in L.A. County South Bay.

SBFN is a dedicated, scalable, high-speed fiber optic network that is used by SBCOG and its member public agencies. SBFN yields higher internet quality, speed, and capacity for lower prices.
“This SBCOG led initiative and investment into critical broadband infrastructure will bring next-generation technology to L.A. County’s South Bay, allowing us to serve all our residents better by connecting municipal facilities to reliable, secure, high-speed, and low-cost broadband while improving their quality of life on so many levels,” SBCOG Past Chair and Redondo Beach Councilmember Christian Horvath said.

In October of 2020, Carson City Hall connected to the SBCOG’s fiber network used as the City’s primary Internet service.

“Adding SBCOG’s fiber line has allowed the City to significantly lower the cost of Internet service and allows the City to improve communications with public services, emergency response, and collaborate on technical and public resources with neighboring cities. The fiber line also allows the City of Carson to immediately recover communication lines in the event of a local outage,” said Mayor of Carson Lula Davis-Holmes.

Construction of the SBFN began in Spring of 2020. By late summer 2020, the core network ring was completed and operational. SBCOG has convened a working group to explore and develop new applications and services that will operate on the network. Some applications may include: improved traffic management, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-network communications, accelerating the transition to telework, enhancing online services, telehealth, building out individual city broadband networks and greenhouse reduction.
