Garth Garcia and Shekinah Austria Headline Filipino American History Month Celebration in Carson October 2

Filipino American History Month is a month-long celebration in Carson showcasing amazing talents and performing artists in music, creative arts and other varied forms of entertainment from the Filipino American community.

The festivities start on Saturday, October 2 that will be held at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center starting at the East Parking Lot at 8:00 a.m. located at 801 E. Carson Street in Carson. This event is open to the public and admission is free.

Headlining this year’s event are Shekinah Austria and Garth Garcia. Shekina Austria is an actress, model, host, singer and songwriter. She has received several awards and recognition including the 2018 Woman of Worth Award for the Most Beautiful Filipina and Spotlight Awards for Star Discovery of the Year. She also won The Outstanding Pilipino Award for Youth Achievement and Fil-Am’s Got Talent Champion. Shekina was also crowned Binibining Pilipinas USA Runner Up in 2016.

Garth Garcia is known as the FilAm Prince of Old Pinoy Music (OPM). He is a decorated recording artist and songwriter with Ivory Music & Video and has an array of awards and nominations such as The Outstanding Filipino Awards Nominee for 2021 and the only Filipino nominated for Best Music Video in the 2019 Asians on Film Festival. Garth won the Best R&B Artist Award in 2018 from Spotlight Awards.

Performers also include Carson Street Dance, Hollywood Dance Moms and Pamana Kali Filipino Martial Arts. A program featuring awards for community leadership, youth achievement, and heroism will also take place on October 2. The awardees are Philippine Nurses Association of Southern California and West L.A. Subchapter (PNASC WLA), Council of Young FilAms in Medicine (CYFAM), Filipino Young Leaders Program (FLYPRO), Consul General Ed Badajos and Ella Jay Basco for Youth Awardee.

“Carson is proud to recognize the contributions of Filipino Americans nationwide especially to our diverse community. Celebrations like Filipino American History Month is what adds to the social fabric that makes our city a unique place to live,” said Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes.
