City of Carson Honored as 2017 Playful City USA Community

Carson, CA (May 17, 2017) – The nationally recognized non-profit KaBOOM! is honoring the City of Carson with a 2017 Playful City USA designation. Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop healthy life skills. The recognized communities transform ordinary places into playful spaces as a solution to the health challenges facing residents.

The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities throughout the USA, including Richmond, Virginia on the East Coast to Carson, California on the West Coast. All these cities make it as easy as possible for kids to play in their respective city. These communities feature safe and engaging play spaces that serve more than 4 million kids around the United States including the 100,000 residents in Carson.

The City of Carson uses its Imagination Playground play system as a mobile recreation unit to help boost play opportunities for children. Because of the ability to move the Imagination Playground, every child in Carson under the age of 10 has access to the unit either through school or our local parks.

“It is an honor to have the City of Carson named as a 2017 Playful City USA recipient,” said Carson Mayor Albert Robles. “In Carson, we value the significance of play spaces that are well-maintained, inviting and accessible to all our residents and visitors. We strive to provide play opportunities for children and adults of all abilities throughout the Carson community, and we understand its importance. For this reason, the City of Carson offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure programs throughout the year to increase physical activity and promote a healthy lifestyle,” added Robles.

The City of Carson recently received a $1.25 million grant to build an all-inclusive playground for children of all abilities. This will be the first playground built in Carson that children with all abilities can access and enjoy like children everywhere.

As cities are becoming hotbeds for innovation, communities across the country are creating inventive ways to attract and retain residents. Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to ensure kids have great places to play – all with the ultimate goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. In addition to the playground down the street, Playful City USA communities are turning grocery stores, vacant lots, crosswalks and sidewalks into opportunities for play.

“We are thrilled to recognize the City of Carson for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.”

KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids the childhood they deserve filled with balanced and active play, so they can thrive.
