Fore Founding Father of Carson, Gil Smith, will spearhead the 50th Anniversary Committee who will be planning the events of Carson’s golden anniversary in 2018.

Planned events in 2018 include the participation of the City of Carson in the Tournament of Roses Parade in January, a gala ball in February, the Miss Carson & Miss Teen Carson Pageant in the Spring, a street fair in the summer and various citywide special events to bare the 50th Anniversary theme throughout the year.

“It has been my honor to have served as a leading part of the founding of the City of Carson. Now, as we prepare to celebrate our City’s 50th Anniversary, I have been given another opportunity to serve our community and I look forward to working with the citizens of Carson,“ said Gil Smith.

Gil Smith has lived in the Carson area for over 50 years. He was the first president of the Citizen’s Committee for the Incorporation for the City of Carson and he served as the founding member of the City Council for 13 years. Smith was mayor of Carson in 1970-71 and 1974-75 and he served as the Interim City Manager in 1998. He was the community leader for the successful campaign to gain approval for stet California State University, Dominguez Hills where he continues to serve as a former chair on the President’s Advisory Council. Gil Smith is the retired director of Government and Public Affairs for the Southern California Association of Governments where he was responsible for the development of a coordinated intergovernmental, legislative and community relations program. His public service and dedication has been well documented through his participation as a board member with the United Way, the American Red Cross, the Emergency Preparedness Commission for L.A. County, the Carson Coordinating Council and many other organizations.

Fundraising events this year include “A White Linen Affair“ event on July 22, 2017, an invitational golf tournament, a cookbook called “A Taste of Carson”, and many more activities as the planning by volunteers and staff of the City moves forward in planning next year’s events.

“I am excited that one of our founding fathers, Gil Smith, has agreed to Chair the 50th Anniversary Planning Committee. It is heartwarming that Carson has an overwhelming amount of support from our community leaders to commemorate the City’s 50th Anniversary of incorporation as we continue to strive towards our motto of ‘Future Unlimited’. I am proud that residents in Carson are coming together, volunteering their time to ’honor our past and envision the future’ together as an All American City,“ said Carson Mayor Albert Robles.

More volunteers from the community are welcome to join the planning of 50th Anniversary events. The Anniversary Planning Committee meets every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. June 14, August 9, and September 13 planning meetings will be held at Carson Park. For more information, please call Recreation and Human Services Division at (310) 847-3570.
