City of Carson Opens 189th St. Pedestrian Bridge to Expand Access to Safe and Sustainable Transportation

Carson, CA - The City of Carson hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 189th St. Pedestrian Bridge on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 3:30 p.m.

The repaired bridge will provide a safe means of passage to the pedestrians and bicyclists who use the bridge as their daily access to Victoria Community Regional Park and Towne Avenue Elementary School from the neighborhood to the Northwest. This convenient and reliable transportation avenue creates opportunities for residents to reduce carbon emissions and fuel cost and increase mobility and wellness.

The project cost is $471,711.82 and was funded by Carson’s Utility User’s Tax, AQMD through AB2766, and Caltrans through TDA3.

Tasks that were completed:
• Cleaning and painting existing tapered steel bridge girders
• Removal of existing damaged asphalt deck
• Installation of a new reinforced concrete on metal decking bridge deck
• Removal of existing guardrail fence
• Installation of a new guardrail fence system with solar lighting
• Removal and replacement of the asphalt concrete pavement approach walkways
• Installation of detectable warning tiles on bridge deck and sidewalk approaches

“I am pleased to ceremonially open this bridge connecting our community. The ribbon cutting today is symbolic of Carson’s goal to continuously find ways to create a safe and sustainable alternative transportation,” said Mayor of Carson Lula Davis-Holmes.
