The mission of the Joseph B. Jr. and Mary Anne O’Neal Stroke Center is to serve the needs of people living with the effects of stroke,
and to provide support for their families. This facility features rehabilitative fitness equipment, and offers a variety of activities including group exercise,
numerous therapies, support groups, social activities, and more. The only requirement is that stroke survivors are at least 6 months post-stroke.
Yoga
This gentle yoga class coordinates breath with movement to flow from one pose to another. It has been modified for stroke survivors with limited mobility,
and caregivers are welcome to attend. Stress is a risk factor for stroke, and yoga is an excellent stress reliever.
Fitness Center
The Stroke Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Once your application has been accepted, you can work out at your own pace in our fitness center,
with supervision from friendly staff members.
Chair Volleyball
Join us every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 a.m. for some exercise with friends. This is seated volleyball with a beach ball,
which leads to improved motor skills, coordination, and verbal communication. This is one of the most popular activities, so come join the fun!
Chair Exercise
This group exercise class focuses on the upper and lower limbs. Group exercise activities provide the stroke survivor with light recreational activities to
supplement the ongoing rehabilitative process.
Occupational Therapy *BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
Occupational therapy is available to stroke survivors who wish to improve their ability to perform daily tasks and successfully execute meaningful
and purposeful activities across the lifespan. Stroke survivors meet one-on-one with a Licensed Occupational Therapist, and
60-minute sessions are available by appointment only.
Speech Therapy
This class is open to all stroke survivors whose speech may have been affected by stroke. This is a group activity with a licensed Speech Pathologist.
Please see the monthly calendar for days and times.
Zumba Gold
Zumba Gold fitness program is a specialty course designed to meet the anatomical, physiological, and psychological needs of the aging population.
Like the traditional Latin-inspired Zumba workout, the Zumba Gold workout incorporates many of the dance/fitness routines set to Latin and international rhythms,
but is performed at a lower intensity. The instructor has modified this class for stroke survivors, so come have fun while you exercise!
Fun Fridays
Stroke survivors and caregivers enjoy social activities including potlucks, movie days, games, excursions, and more.
Please see the monthly calendar for specific activities and times.
Water Exercise
This group class is held offsite several times each month (weather permitting). The therapeutic heated pool provides safe access to stroke survivors with a ramp,
handrails, and a lifeguard on duty in the water. The near weightless environment relieves stress from joints and allows muscles to operate freely.
The water provides the body with the opportunity to change positions and improve circulation. Classes are led by a lifeguard on deck.
Meet at the Stroke Center at 1:15 p.m. for transportation to the pool. We will return by 3:45 p.m.
Caregiver and Family Support Group
Caregiving is an incredible act of love and patience, and caregivers need to take time from themselves so that they are capable of caring for others.
Join us in this support group to discuss your daily successes and struggles. Call the Stroke Center for days and times. (310) 952-1763.
