Lithium-ion batteries would be stored within modular outdoor enclosures, and power that is released or captured by the batteries would be transferred to and from the SCE Nola Substation via an underground 66-kilovolt generation transmission (gen-tie) line. The proposed project would consist of lithium-ion batteries installed in racks located in prefabricated outdoor enclosures; inverters; medium-voltage transformers; switchgear; a collector substation; and other associated equipment. The proposed facility would provide a service by receiving energy (charging) from the SCE transmission system, storing the energy, and then later delivering energy (discharging) back to the point of interconnection at the SCE Nola Substation. The facilities would operate year-round and would be available to receive or deliver energy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
