Biography
In March 2022, Michael Whittiker, Jr. was appointed Director of the Department of Community Services/Recreation/Park Maintenance in the City of Carson. However, his relationship to the City runs long and deep. Mr. Whittiker was raised, educated, and has lived in the City his entire adult life. Moreover, the Carson connection continues with his children, as they too were raised in the City.

In total, Mr. Whittiker has been an employee of Carson for more than 35 years. His tenure began in 1987 as a Summer Youth Worker and he has steadily moved up the ranks. He has acquired a broad understanding and appreciation of the community and its needs, while obtaining extensive experience in Recreation and Social Services. He has partnered with many organizations to provide programming that truly serves residents. Moreover, Mr. Whittiker has worked as a volunteer coach for multiple young men and women; mentored teens through Hands Without Guns, a program for at-risk youth; and hosted multiple, highly attended, Citywide special events, such as the Jazz Fest and Philippine Independence Day.

Prior to his promotion to Director, Mr. Whittiker served as Human Services Manager, where in March 2020 he was selected to lead the City of Carson's Covid-19 Task Force. The team was charged with coordinating the City's response to the pandemic and ensuring that Carson's most vulnerable residents were provided the resources needed to weather the challenges brought on by Covid. In December 2021, he was appointed Acting-Director of Community Services/Parks and Recreation. In his current role, he directly oversees two of the City's largest Divisions, Community Services and Recreation.

Mr. Whittiker is a graduate of Dominguez High School in Compton, California; he then promoted to Compton Community College where he received his Associates Degree in General Education. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cal State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), majoring in Sociology with a concentration in The Family. After graduating with his BA degree he was appointed as an Alumni Advisory Councilmember of CSUDH, which is a position he currently holds today.
